Sri Lanka holds a special place in the Ramayana story as the kingdom of Ravana. This tour takes you to over 15 sacred sites associated with the epic, from the Seetha Amman Temple where Sita was held captive, to the Divurumpola Temple where her Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) took place.

Along the way, you'll discover ancient temples nestled in misty mountains, explore caves where Ravana is said to have hidden Sita, and visit sacred sites that have been places of worship for thousands of years. Each stop is enriched with stories from the epic, brought to life by our knowledgeable guides who are experts in Ramayana history.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Colombo Temples

Airport pickup and transfer to Colombo. Visit the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya — believed to be sanctified by Lord Buddha. According to Ramayana, this area is associated with Vibhishana's coronation. Evening orientation walk through Colombo. Welcome dinner at hotel.

Day 2: Munneswaram & Manavari Temples

Drive to Chilaw to visit Munneswaram Kovil, one of five ancient Shiva temples (Pancha Ishwarams). Lord Rama is believed to have prayed here to cleanse the sin of killing Ravana. Continue to Manavari Temple. Visit the Ramayana-era Shiva lingam sites. Overnight in Anuradhapura.

Day 3: Anuradhapura & Ritigala

Explore the ancient city of Anuradhapura, believed to be Ravana's secondary capital. Visit the sacred Bodhi Tree — the oldest historically documented tree in the world. Trek to Ritigala Mountain to visit Gayathri Peedam, associated with Hanuman's search for Sita. Overnight in Trincomalee.

Day 4: Trincomalee – Koneshwaram Temple

Visit the iconic Koneshwaram Temple (Temple of the Thousand Pillars) on Swami Rock, overlooking the Indian Ocean. Ravana is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva here. Visit Kanniya Hot Springs — believed to have been created by Ravana. Explore the beautiful Nilaveli Beach. Drive to Nuwara Eliya.

Day 5: Seetha Amman Temple & Ashok Vatika

Visit the Seetha Amman Temple — the exact location where Ravana held Sita in captivity. See the footprints on the rock beside the stream where Sita is believed to have bathed. Explore Hakgala Botanical Gardens, believed to be the legendary Ashok Vatika where Sita was kept surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Day 6: Ravana Cave & Ella

Visit Ravana Ella Cave — where Ravana is said to have hidden Sita. Trek to the magnificent Ravana Falls, one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Drive to Ella and visit the Divurumpola Temple — believed to be the sacred site where Sita underwent the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) to prove her purity.

Day 7: Ussangoda & Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple

Drive south to Ussangoda National Park, believed to be the spot where Hanuman landed in Lanka, causing the earth to burn red (the soil is still red today). Visit the Panchamukhi Hanuman Temple near Ramboda Falls, one of the most sacred Ramayana sites in Sri Lanka. Evening at leisure in the hill country.

Day 8: Kelaniya Temple & Departure

Morning visit to Kelaniya for final blessings. Transfer to the airport with stops at any remaining Ramayana sites along the route. Farewell lunch featuring traditional Sri Lankan cuisine. Airport drop-off for your departure with memories of an extraordinary spiritual journey through the living Ramayana.

Most Ramayana sites in Sri Lanka are active temples and well-maintained. Some archaeological sites are in their natural state which adds to their authenticity. All sites on our itinerary are accessible and safe to visit.
Modest clothing is required at all religious sites — shoulders and knees must be covered. Shoes must be removed before entering temples. We recommend carrying a sarong or shawl. White or light-colored clothing is appreciated at Buddhist sites.
Yes, we can arrange special puja ceremonies at key temples along the trail. Please let us know your requirements in advance so we can coordinate with the temple priests. Additional costs for special ceremonies are not included in the tour price.
